What is Product Information Management?

Product Information Management Definition

Product Information Management (PIM) is the practice of collecting, storing, and maintaining all of a company's product information in one central place. This includes details such as descriptions, specifications, images, pricing, and category placement. A PIM system acts as the single trusted source for this data, so that everyone in a business, and every channel it sells through, draws product information from the same maintained set rather than from scattered spreadsheets and separate systems.

What does a PIM manage?

A PIM holds the many kinds of information that describe a product. This covers basic details such as names and identifiers, technical Attributes such as size or material, marketing content such as descriptions and images, and the Taxonomy that determines how products are categorized. It also tracks which information is complete and which still needs work, so teams can see at a glance whether a product is ready to publish. The aim is to bring all of this together in one place instead of spreading it across disconnected tools.

Why does it matter?

Most businesses gather product data from many sources, such as suppliers, internal teams, and manufacturers, and sell it across many channels, each with its own format and requirements. Without a central system this quickly becomes inconsistent, with the same product described differently from one place to the next. A PIM keeps the information accurate and consistent, makes it faster to prepare and publish products, and reduces the errors that lead to abandoned carts and returns. As the number of products and sales channels grows, it becomes the foundation other systems rely on for correct product data.

How does PIM relate to PXM?

The two are closely connected. PIM focuses on making sure product data is correct, complete, and centrally managed. Product Experience Management (PXM) builds on that trusted data and focuses on shaping it into the right presentation for each channel, audience, and market. In practice PIM is the foundation, and PXM is what turns well-managed data into a compelling product experience wherever a customer encounters it.
