Location Master Data is the authoritative record of every physical or logical location that matters to a business's operations (warehouses, distribution centres, retail stores, supplier sites, manufacturing plants, and shipping origins) maintained as a shared reference across all systems.

What does location master data include?

A location record typically holds a unique identifier, a name and type (warehouse, store, dock, virtual), a full address, geographic coordinates, operating hours, and references to related entities such as the managing business unit or assigned supplier. Logistics-facing systems may also attach capacity, handling capabilities, and carrier preferences.

Why is it treated as master data?

Location data is referenced by many systems simultaneously: order management routes shipments from it, inventory systems track stock within it, finance allocates costs to it, and compliance maps it to tax jurisdictions. When location records diverge across systems, stock figures become unreliable, shipments are routed incorrectly, and financial reporting loses accuracy. Centralising it as master data, governed through an MDM approach, keeps all systems aligned to the same source.

How does it relate to other master data domains?

Location master data connects closely to Supplier Master Data (a supplier operates from one or more locations), customer master data (customers have billing and shipping locations), and product master data (products are stocked at or shipped from specific locations). These relationships are defined in the organisation's Data Model.
