What is a Product Listing?

Product Listing Definition

A Product Listing is the presentation of a single product on a sales channel, made up of all the information a shopper sees: the title, description, images, price, attributes, and availability. It is the unit of a product's presence on an ecommerce site or marketplace, the record that a customer views, evaluates, and purchases from. A complete, accurate listing helps products be found and sold, while a poor one leads to low visibility and lost sales.

How does a product listing relate to PIM or MDM?

A product listing is one of the main outputs of a well-managed data process. A PIM system stores product content once and uses it to generate listings tailored to each channel's format and requirements, and an MDM foundation ensures the data behind every listing stays consistent wherever it appears. When the source data is clean and complete, listings can be produced and updated at scale; when it is not, each listing has to be fixed by hand, and the same errors surface across every channel.

What is the difference between a product listing and a product record?

The two are related but sit at different stages: a product record is the internal, master version of all the information held about a product, while a product listing is the channel-facing version derived from it. One product record can produce many listings, each adapted to the requirements of a specific marketplace or store. The record is the source of truth kept inside your systems; the listing is what the customer actually sees.
